Neglect!

I have been terribly neglectful of this blog, and the endeavor of questing for a one-roll Yahtzee of late.  But now the holidays are just about upon us.  It seems to me that the only rational course of action for this time of year is to start rolling the dice again.  I will try to set aside time regularly to continue the quest.

For the record, on 9/8/11, I rolled 75 times, but did not get a Yahtzee.  That brings the cumulative total to 836.

Today I rolled for 20 minutes straight, resulting in 180 rolls.  Still no Yahtzee.  1,016 rolls all together since I've started this blog.

I'm looking forward to some holiday Yahtzee attempts.  I hope you'll celebrate the holidays with five 6-sided dice as well!

Good luck, good health, and Yahtzee!

Sydney and the Dice

I rolled my dice with Sydney around for the first time today.  At first she seemed quite interested in them, but then she became annoyed.  (Come to think of it, this is her attitude toward most things.)

118 rolls today, for a cumulative total of 761 rolls.  No Yahtzee.

9/2 - Still No Yahtzee

I haven't been rolling as much as I would like to since I started this blog, but over the weekend, I did get some quality Yahtzee attempts in.

On Sunday 9/2 I spent time at my boyfriend's house, rolling dice while he napped.

I rolled a few different times that day, and those attempts added up to 402 rolls for the day.  Added to my 8/25 attempts, I have a cumulative total of 643 rolls.  Lots of 4-of-a-kind rolls, but no Yahtzee.

Rest assured, I will keep trying.

One-roll Yahztee in Public Places

It began at Indian Summer in Monterey, CA.  It was Saturday night, August 25, 2012.

I accompanied my boyfriend to go listen to The Wharf Rats with Nancy Jones play some good classic rock.  The music was excellent, but that didn't change the fact that I felt, as I usually do, massively socially awkward.  Eye contact with performers in a small venue practically makes me break out into a sweat.  (See here for a video I made about that whole topic.)

I thought that this might be a good opportunity to indulge in some One-roll Yahtzee Fever inspired activities.  I took off my Greek Fisherperson's hat, and rolled the five dice that I just so happened to be carrying.

The hat was necessary because there were big slats in the table, and the dice would have rolled right through.  Also, I didn't want to be knocking over everyone's beer in an effort to get the dice that would inevitably fall on the ground.

I had the chance to make 241 rolls that evening, and I have to say, it significantly reduced my feelings of social anxiety.  There was something reassuring about having a little something to do.  It was also an activity that allowed me to converse and be engaged with my surroundings at the same time.  No one-roll Yahtzee this time, but I plan to continue at my next opportunity.

In the interest of full disclosure, a couple of the 241 rolls were made down the street at London Bridge pub, while listening to Microtonic Harmonic.

And that brings me to another issue.  Can I continue my tally where I left off?  That's what I originally did in my video where I got a Yahtzee after 1,116 rolls.  After 1,105 rolls, I had somewhere to be, so I left, and picked it up the next day.  I just couldn't bear to start all over again.   Does it matter if you do it all in one sitting or not?  There's something more exciting and romantic (maybe that's a stretch) about doing all the rolling at once, but is it breaking the law if you don't?

Welcome to 1 in 1,296!

Welcome to 1 in 1,296!

If you roll 5 6-sided dice, there's a 1 in 1,296 chance that all the dice will come up the same number.  This is known as a one-roll Yahtzee.

Notable YouTube personage Brady Haran has started something of a one-roll Yahtzee craze with this video.

He documented his attempts at a one-roll Yahtzee, then called upon anyone else crazy enough to sit down and try it to send in video footage.  People all over the world have been doing just that.

Here's my effort, from the end of July, 2012.  It took me 1,116 rolls.

Here's Brady's Yahtzee playlist on YouTube, where you can check out lots of different folks trying for a one-roll Yahtzee.  (And if you want my advice, I recommend you subscribe to his Numberphile channel on YouTube.  It's awesome!)

Now I am fully consumed by one-roll Yahtzee fever, and I've taken to recreational dice rolling.  I carry 5 small dice in my purse, and a small notebook for the tally marks.  I'm planning on documenting my results here, hopefully with some interesting photos or anecdotes to go along with the statistics.

Hope you'll follow along, and maybe you'll get your own case of One-roll Yahtzee Fever!
